With HÔTEL NOIR II, J. Konrad Schmidt presents the continuation of his long-term project exploring female eroticism. Since 2010, the Berlin-based photographer has been portraying anonymous women as well as figures active in the erotic scene, capturing them in the quiet, intimate atmosphere of hotel rooms around the world.
Created exclusively on analog black-and-white film, the images come alive through their focus on the female protagonists and the interplay of light and shadow. Central to the project is giving women a voice and the opportunity to depict their fantasies in a self-determined way. Specific attention is paid to the inclusion of women with physical disabilities, reflecting Schmidt’s own biography and experiences with illness.
As an ode to the return to the analog experience of photography, the works are not available online and can only be encountered in book form or at rare exhibitions. The first book, HÔTEL NOIR, was awarded Gold at the German Photo Book Award 2020. At CHAUSSEE 36, Schmidt now presents a selection of gelatine silver prints from HÔTEL NOIR II for the first time, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the dark, sensual world of his photography.
J. Konrad Schmidt (*1984, Berlin) studied photography at the LAZI Academy in Stuttgart/Esslingen. His work has won numerous international awards. He is an elected member of the DGPh – German Society for Photography, the BFF – Professional Association of Independent Photographers and Film Creators, the ADC – Art Directors Club Germany, and the AOP – Association of Photographers London.

Mit HÔTEL NOIR II präsentiert J. Konrad Schmidt die Fortsetzung seines Langzeitprojekts zum Thema des weiblichen Erotismus. Seit 2010 fotografiert der Berliner Fotograf weltweit anonyme als auch in der Szene des Erotismus tätige Frauen in der ruhigen Atmosphäre von unterschiedlichen Hotelräumen. Die ausschließlich analogen Bilder, auf spezifisch angefertigtem Schwarz-Weiß Film, wirken durch den Fokus auf die weiblichen Protagonistinnen und das Spiel von Schatten und Licht.
Den Frauen eine Stimme zu geben und ihnen die Möglichkeit eröffnen selbstbestimmt mit ihren eigenen Fantasien umzugehen, steht im Vordergrund. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Inklusion von Frauen mit körperlicher Einschränkung, wodurch Schmidt indirekt aus seiner Biografie und der Erfahrung mit Krankheit zitiert.
Als Anstoß an die Rückkehr zum analogen Erleben von Fotografien sind die Werke nicht Online zu finden, sondern nur in Buchform oder seltenen Ausstellungen zu erleben. Das erste Buch HÔTEL NOIR gewann Gold beim Deutschen Fotobuchpreis 2020. Bei CHAUSSEE 36 zeigt Schmidt nun das erste Mal eine Auswahl von Silbergelatineabzügen aus HÔTEL NOIR II und lädt ein, in die dunkle sinnliche Welt seiner Werke einzutauchen.
